for Proactive Homeland Security Preparedness

To deliver state-of-the-art student, staff, and curriculum development programs for educational institutions, Kirkwood Community College maintains one of the nation's strongest environmental health and safety worker training programs offering open-enrollment courses on its campuses and contracting with business and industry to deliver worker training on-site. In 2003, Kirkwood locally offered over 200 short-term health and safety courses providing over 1,500 hours of instruction attended by 4,000 students. In addition, Kirkwood's environmental and fire programs offered training and education to an additional 5,000 students. This training covered industrial fire and rescue, water and wastewater technology, and solid waste management.

Kirkwood has conducted customized training programs or Train-the-Trainer programs for workers and supervisors at over 50 corporations. Corporations include Bell Helicopter, Cargill, John Deere, Rockwell International, Admiral, Raytheon, Amana Refrigeration, Alcoa Aluminum, General Mills, Kraft Foods, Eveready Battery, Monsanto, 3M, Proctor and Gamble, Quaker Oats, Dial Corporation, the University of Iowa, and Iowa State University.

Terrorism Awareness Series:

This is a collection of fast-moving short courses for business and industry to help employers and employees prepare for and hopefully prevent a disaster. The courses are a mix of video, lecture, group activity and self-evaluation designed to be offered by local emergency responders.

  • First Preventer Training for Business and Industry (1 Hour)
  • Terrorism in Perspective (2 hours)
  • Proactive Preparedness for Terrorism, Strategies for Business and Industry
    (2 hours)
  • Planning for Workplace Emergencies, Expecting the Unexpected (2 hours)
  • Vulnerability Analysis, Threat and Risk Assessment (4 hours)
  • Incident Management for Industrial Responders (10 hours)
  • Introduction to Terrorism Response (10 hours)

Bioterrorism Series:

  • Introductory Characterization and Control of Anthrax (2 hours)
    Includes a laboratory exercise on sampling for biological agents.
  • Introductory Characterization and Control of Hemorrhagic Fever and Encephalitis Viruses (2 hours)
    Includes a laboratory exercise addressing recombinant genetics.
  • Introductory Characterization and Control of Plague and Tularemia (2 hours)
    Includes a laboratory exercise on vector sampling and control.
  • Introductory Characterization and Control of Smallpox (2 hours)
    Includes a laboratory simulation on infection control through ring vaccination.
  • Introductory Characterization and Control of Botulism (2 hours)
    Includes a laboratory exercise on food and water security.
  • Sampling Biological and Chemical Unknowns (2 hours)
    Includes the use of biological sampling kit to collect a variety of liquid and solid unknowns and sample collection, packaging, transportation, and chain of custody issues.

Terrorism Response Series:

  • Monitoring and Sampling for Unknown Chemical and Biological Agents (24 hours)
    This performance-based training will prepare responders for a wide range of hazardous material-related tasks during a terrorist-initiated incident. The course will present the scientific aspects of chemical, biological, and radiological threats. Students retrieve and analyze response data, assimilating it with monitoring data. Participants will use state-of-the-art technology to detect, identify, and neutralize chemical and radiological agents; use emergency decontamination procedures on victims; protect responders by selecting proper PPE and decontamination procedures; and verify proper response procedures.
  • Use of Semantic Technology for Emergency Operations Centers (24 hours)
    This course covers the critical elements of an EOC operation: communication techniques, shared decision-making, information retrieval, analysis and reporting, and working within a unified command structure. Course Manual
