Meeting the Needs of Today's World - 2004

Presentations from the 2004 PETE Conference, Oklahoma City:
Energy & Sustainability Literacy by Dr. Debra Rowe, Oakland Community College
Wastewater From Poultry Operations by Dr. Sam Heintz, Southern Arkansas University
The U.S.-Mexican Border by Russell C. Smith, El Paso Community College

The 59 attendees at the 2004 Central PETE Conference (both North and South Central PETE members attended) were treated to many sessions that were designed to revitalize their teaching strategies, course offerings, and students. Everyone was welcomed to Oklahoma City by Jerry Carroll, the President of Oklahoma State University – Oklahoma City. James Shepherd of North Central PETE and Russell Smith of South Central PETE emceed the proceedings.

Pamela Boatright with Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education presented Safety Compliance Approach for Oklahoma’s Institutions of Higher Learning. The Semantic Web was presented by Doug Feil, Kirkwood Community College. Lisa LaDue, National Mass Fatalities Institute, gave a presentation on Acute Traumatic Stress, and Deb Rowe, Oakland Community College, challenged the group with Teaching Energy Literacy and Sustainability.

Other sessions during the three-day conference included fall protection, electrical safety, measuring safety performance, partnership programs, teaching without lecturing, students designing HAZWOPER scenarios, sampling and monitoring, poultry wastewater processing, and lessons learned.

In talking to the attendees, the impression was that this was the best conference Central PETE has had and everyone went home with new ideas, new resources, and renewed energy.
