An annual conference is evidence of the commitment of NC PETE to the development of quality environmental education. The conferences provide a myriad of opportunities for instructors to network, improve instructional skill, and increase awareness of current and upcoming technology. The conferences also provide instructors with opportunities to interface with those who provide the technical support and equipment for environmental training, colleges and universities with advanced degrees in the environmental fields, and employers of environmental workers. The need for cooperative efforts between educational institutions, government agencies, professional organizations and private industry has been recognized as a national priority. The role of the community colleges continues to grow in supporting the needs of industry through not only vocational education but also as a key transition point between secondary education and the four-year colleges. Through grants from the National Science Foundation to the Advanced Technology Environmental Education Center (ATEEC), NC-PETE has received funding for developing and hosting a professional development conference for instructors, which is an ongoing programmatic focus for the NC PETE organization.
