THREE STATES ADOPT KIRKWOOD HAZWOPER TRAINING FOR DNR EMPLOYEES
In August 2008, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) became
the third state regulatory agency to adopt the Kirkwood’s online Hazwoper
(Hazardous Waste Site Worker and Emergency Response) training for its
employees. Minnesota joins Pennsylvania and Virginia to partner with
Kirkwood’s Environmental Training Center in offering Environmental
Technology Online (ET Online) courses. All three have become ET Online

20% RISE IN OSHA STUDENTS TRAINED BY KIRKWOOD
“Student enrollment is steadily increasing,” said Bob Downs, Assistant
Director of Midwest OSHA for Kirkwood Community College. “This is due largely
to building an outstanding reputation for our training. Our satisfied customers
then spread the word with their colleagues.” Downs added that there is
a concerted effort to “get the word out” by increased advertising,
and visiting as many occupational shows as possible. MORE

22nd ANNUAL CITA KIRKWOOD FIRE SCHOOL A SUCCESS
On the weekend of September 27-28, 2008, Kirkwood Community College welcomed
over 900 participants to the 22nd Annual Central Iowa Training Association-Kirkwood
Fire School.
“If it were not for the cooperation of all the different areas
at Kirkwood, this fire school would not be the success it is,” said

with University of Pittsburg Medical Center

UPMC (University of Pittsburgh Medical
Center), a
major health care and academic center located in western
Pennsylvania, is collaborating with the American Association
of Community Colleges (AACC) to help two-year
colleges across the country prepare their local communities
for disaster response.
Partners in the initiative are developing
curricula to address core principles for preparedness, cybersecurity,
business continuity and response to biological incidents
in order to help communities prepare for disasters. Community
colleges will be able to integrate the curricula into
credit programs, workforce development activities and
