Terrorist Agent Control Technology
In 2003 Kirkwood received a grant from the National Science Foundation
through which they developed nine credit hours of instruction in
the form of learning objects that could be utilized as stand-alone
coursework or incorporated into existing curricula. These courses
were developed in such a way that they can be utilized in a traditional
classroom setting as well as in an on-line or Internet-assisted
learning environment.
The
Terrorist Agent Control Technology (TACT) program is designed
to provide a basic scientific understanding of the biological
and chemical agents used by terrorists as well as introduce
the instrumentation and techniques used to sample and detect
the agents.
Since the fall of 2005, students have enrolled in the TACT
initiative credit courses through Kirkwood Community College
and other partner schools. The students are able to access
the courses at their convenience, enhancing their education
while not conflicting with their individual traditional classroom
commitments. In this way they are able to complete the TACT
Certification concurrently with their primary degree program.
The courses have also been adapted for continuing educational
opportunities through the ABIH (American Board of Industrial
Hygienists) and PACE (Professional Acknowledgement for Continuing
Education).

Perspectives on Terrorism
|
|
Is terrorism a new concept? What can be done to
prepare? What is the psychological impact of terrorism?
These and other questions are answered as students
explore the many perspectives on terrorism.
|

|
Biological Agents of Terrorism
|

|
From an outbreak of smallpox to a citywide case
of botulism, students identify potential biological
agents, examine their impact, and review appropriate
response plans.
|

|
Chemical Agents of Terrorism
|
|
Industrial chemicals as well as military agents
that pose a threat to our security are detailed as
the student examines the effects of these potential
agents of terrorism.
|

|
Facility Security and Deterrents to Terrorism
|
|
A terrorist attack can be internal or external;
from these two extremes, students identify how to safeguard
their infrastructure, minimize the likelihood of attack,
and how best to recover after an incident.
|

|
Terrorist Agent Monitoring and Detection
|
|
From continuous monitoring to sampling for and detection
of a suspected agent, students explore worlds of PID,
IR, and GC Mass Spectroscopy, Immunofluorescence, and
PCR Technology.
|
Take one TACT course or take them all and earn your certification.
Start today with either Perspectives on Terrorism or Biological
Agents of Terrorism. Continue your training with Chemical
Agents of Terrorism, Facility Security and Deterrents to
Terrorism, and Terrorist Agent Monitoring and Detection.
